Desferal Delivery

Although some sources claim that an iron (ferritin) level between 2000 and 3000 can be maintained for 20 or 30 years without harm, you may need (or be advised) to get your iron levels down. This may take some time - each dose of Desferal typically removes only a fraction of teh iron you take aboard with a two-unit transfusion.

It needs to be injected over a period of several hours, typically overnight. So how you deliver it to your body can become an issue. There are two main delivery methods I have come across:

The first - and probably more common - method involves using a small electrical pump to inject the drug subcutaneously using a 'butterfly needle', a process which sounds none too pleasant!

The other (thanks to Bob Carroll for this discourse!) goes by the name of the "Sof-set Infusion Set" (REF MMT - 111). It's supplied by MiniMed in Sylmar, California. Their phone number is +1 (818) 362-5958. Their 800 number is (800) 843-6687. You need to ask for the Sof-set serter. This literally injects the tube into some fatty area of your body like your stomach, thighs, or the back of your arms. The inserter is make of plastic, and is like an extra thick fountain pen which has a spring action when you hit the button. The good thing about this system is that the needle is withdrawn immediately after insertion and what is left in the area of insertion is an almost microscopic tubing that lets the drug in. However, the US FDA apparently only approves it for diabetic use!

I have no information about its availability outside the US, or any similar products.
